Bainbridge Island School District · grades 5–6 · 456 students · the island's single intermediate school - every Bainbridge fifth and sixth grader attends
You don't choose Sakai; choosing Bainbridge Island chooses it for you. Every district fifth and sixth grader funnels from the island's three elementaries into this one building for exactly two years, then moves next door to Woodward Middle School. So the useful questions aren't "is this the right school" but "what do these two years do, and what has to be timed correctly while my kid is here."
What the two years do is stage the jump to secondary school on purpose: fifth graders rotate between two teachers and sixth graders between three, a deliberate ramp toward a six-period day. Outcomes are strong for a building that enrolls literally everyone, with 87% proficiency in English language arts, 80% in math, and state recognition to match. The Math Olympiad program is enormous too: nearly a third of the school practices weekly, and students have placed in the top 2% nationally. What has to be timed correctly is the highly-capable screening that all fifth graders receive each spring, because it gates the accelerated 6/7 math class, the district's first real acceleration decision. The main friction to plan around isn't academic at all. It's the district's unusually rigid transportation and attendance rulebook.
