Self-contained HC cohort ('Code 33') in grades 3-5 hosted in a dedicated classroom at Lakeridge Elementary, historically branded E2 (Expedition for Excellence). At Islander Middle School the HC program focuses on Science, English, and Social Science; other content areas integrate with the general population. Designed for students roughly in the top 2% cognitive aptitude and top 10% academically.

Mercer Island School District · grades K-5 · 431 students · attendance-area neighborhood school on the island's west side
West Mercer's headline scores clear almost any bar a parent would set, with 84% of students meeting standard in English and 82% in math. If you live inside its boundary, that is what you get, because the district has closed K-5 to nonresident transfers entirely. The reason to read further is the school's own diagnosis of itself. Its improvement plan concedes that only 68% of students made a typical year's math growth on internal diagnostics in 2024-25, and in second grade, fewer than half did. Meanwhile the share of students scoring at the advanced level in math has been sliding roughly four points a year. High-intake schools can coast on proficiency. West Mercer, to its credit, is publicly grading itself on growth instead, and the growth picture is mixed in exactly the grades where math gaps compound.
One more thing to settle before weighting this school for an advanced learner: the district's self-contained Highly Capable classroom (called E2) may or may not be housed here. Our records place it at West Mercer, while the district's own program page says Lakeridge. Verify with the district before assuming a qualifying third grader stays on this campus.
