Northshore School District · grades PreK–5 · 715 students · attendance-area school and Elementary Advanced Program host in the district's fastest-growing corridor
Fernwood is what a boomtown school looks like after the boom finally gets paid for. Its Bothell catchment absorbed so much new housing that Fernwood and neighboring Kokanee gained 539 elementary students in five years, an entire school's worth, and the campus spent a decade sprawled across as many as 18 portables. In January 2026 the fix landed: a bond-funded two-story building with 13 permanent classrooms, two dedicated music rooms, and an inclusive playground, retiring 16 portables at once. What that building houses is a 715-student school where advanced pacing is the norm rather than the exception. 45.2% of students carry a highly capable designation, and the last self-contained Elementary Advanced Program (EAP) classroom dissolves into a fully integrated model in 2026-27. Families of high-flyers get depth without needing a golden ticket. The sharper questions are for everyone else, because the school's own climate surveys show belonging gaps for Black, Latino, and special-education students, gaps the school documents and is working publicly.
