Jing Mei Elementary School

Bellevue School District · PK, K–5 · 577 students · lottery-entry Mandarin dual-language choice school

The verdict

Applying to Jing Mei is not really an elementary-school decision. It's a bet on a K–12 language pipeline: the region's only 90/10 two-way Mandarin immersion program, rolling up through Tillicum Middle School to a dual-language diploma at Newport High. The entry point is a kindergarten lottery you mostly get one shot at. Miss it, and later entry requires passing a written-and-oral Mandarin exam for a seat that may never open.

The academic trade is unusually legible in the data. Math results are elite: 92.7% meeting standard and improving, with two-thirds of students scoring at the advanced level. English scores merely track the middle of the school's demographic peer group, the predictable cost of a model that delivers just 10% of instruction in English through second grade. The genuine conflict to plan for: a child who qualifies for Bellevue's self-contained highly capable cohort cannot take it at Jing Mei. That family has to pick a track, Mandarin or the cohort, usually around second grade.
