Elementary Centered Services run as full-day self-contained cohorts at designated sites, using one-grade-advanced standards in core subjects. Middle and high school students move through advanced classes as a cohort within their neighborhood school. High school cohort enrolls in IB in grades 10-11 with the goal of completing the IB diploma at the end of 11th grade.

Two facts explain almost everything about Tyee. First, it is one of only two Bellevue middle schools (Odle is the other) hosting the district's Centered program, the self-contained cohort in which highly capable students take every core class together at an accelerated pace (Bellevue School District course catalog, 2024-25). That single structural role pushes the highly-capable share of enrollment to 37.5% and the school's combined test scores to the 100th percentile of demographically similar Washington schools. Second, the competitive machinery around the academics, from Mathcounts to robotics to debate to rocketry, is largely built and staffed by the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA). The PTSA sets a $35,000 fundraising goal, and in some clubs a child's seat is conditioned on a parent's willingness to volunteer.
Tyee delivers a genuinely elite middle-school experience, but the delivery mechanism assumes an engaged, available family. If you can supply that, and if your child either holds a Centered placement or is comfortable being a strong general-track student next to a very visible accelerated cohort, it is hard to beat. The district's own climate survey, showing belonging at 42% for Black and Pacific Islander students against 61% overall, is the caveat to sit with.
