Beginning 2025-26 the district shifted K-5 services to Classroom-Based Services (CBS) delivered by general-ed teachers in students' neighborhood schools, replacing the former K5HC weekly 30-minute pull-outs. Full-Time Quest (elementary self-contained) and Middle School Quest continue without service-model changes. The earlier Part-Time Quest (POQ) pull-out was discontinued after 2024-25; existing 2nd-5th POQ students transitioned to Full-Time Quest in fall 2025.

Nearly half of Evergreen's students carry a formal Highly Capable designation: 45.8%, per the state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), 2024-25. That one statistic explains almost everything else here: the state-championship Science Olympiad teams, the National Science Bowl trips to Washington D.C., the 97th-percentile advanced scores, and the fact that the doors are shut. Evergreen hosts one of Lake Washington School District's (LWSD) Middle School Quest cohorts, the self-contained highly capable program, which imports identified students from feeder patterns across the Sammamish Plateau. The resulting demand has the school listed as closed to all transfers and in-district variances for 2026-27 (district open-schools list, May 2026). There are exactly two ways in: live inside the boundary, or be placed into Middle School Quest by the district's assessment committee, a decision made in elementary school rather than at enrollment time.
Two caveats belong next to the trophy shelf. First, the enrichment engine that produces those competition results is run largely by the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), funded by fees and parent labor, and the district provides no after-school activity bus. The famous opportunities assume a parent who can drive at 4 p.m. Second, this is a strict, high-structure building where district survey data shows workload concerns rising, and regular attendance sags noticeably by eighth grade. For a competition-minded STEM kid with logistical support at home, Evergreen may be the strongest public middle school peer group in Washington. For a kid who needs looseness, warmth, or slack, read the culture section carefully.
