Beginning 2025-26 the district shifted K-5 services to Classroom-Based Services (CBS) delivered by general-ed teachers in students' neighborhood schools, replacing the former K5HC weekly 30-minute pull-outs. Full-Time Quest (elementary self-contained) and Middle School Quest continue without service-model changes. The earlier Part-Time Quest (POQ) pull-out was discontinued after 2024-25; existing 2nd-5th POQ students transitioned to Full-Time Quest in fall 2025.

Northstar is a micro-school: about 30 students per grade, seven teachers averaging 21 years of experience, and test results at the literal top of the state. It sits at the 100th percentile among demographically similar Washington middle schools for both overall proficiency and Level 4 advanced scores. Be clear-eyed about the mechanism, though. A student body that is 31% formally identified highly capable, 3.4% low-income, and entirely self-selected by families willing to drive every day (there is no school bus) would post elite numbers under almost any model. What you are actually choosing is the model itself: multi-age thematic classrooms, a three-year advisory cohort called Support Group, mandatory whole-school field trips, and clubs that exist only when parents volunteer to run them.
The candid part of the school's own paperwork is the tell for fit. Northstar's improvement plan names stress and anxiety as the leading social-emotional concern for its high-achieving students, enough of one that mindfulness and basic neuroscience are now taught school-wide. This is a demanding, tightly held community. It suits a self-managing kid who wants to be known by name and a family with bandwidth to participate; it is a poor match for one that needs busing, on-site sports, or anonymity.
